What a GLP-1 weight-management medicine is

GLP-1 receptor agonists copy a gut hormone your body already makes after eating. They reduce appetite and slow how quickly the stomach empties, which is why people on them tend to feel full sooner and stay full longer. They are licensed for weight management alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, not instead of them.

Semaglutide is one such medicine. Until recently it was only available for weight management as a weekly injection. Oral Wegovy is the same molecule in a once-daily tablet, made possible by an absorption enhancer that briefly opens a chemical window in the stomach lining. That window is narrow, which is why the tablet comes with an administration routine the injection never needed.

Which guide answers your question

When is oral Wegovy coming to Spain?

Oral Wegovy is not yet dispensed anywhere in Spain, and EU authorisation alone does not set that date. On 15 July 2026 the European Commission granted centralised marketing authorisation for oral Wegovy across all EU member states, the first oral GLP-1 medicine approved for weight management in the EU, following a positive opinion from the European Medicines Agency in May 2026. Centralised authorisation means the medicine is legally approved for the whole EU at once, but it does not put a box on a Spanish pharmacy shelf by itself.

Two things still have to happen nationally. Spain needs its own ficha técnica, the Spanish-language product information used by prescribers and pharmacists, and separately a pricing notification for the Spanish market, a step that applies even to a medicine that is not publicly funded. Once those are settled, the manufacturer still has to allocate supply to Spain and get stock into wholesalers and pharmacies.

The injectable version of the same medicine gives a realistic sense of scale: the EU authorised injectable Wegovy on 6 January 2022, and it did not reach Spanish pharmacies until May 2024, a gap of roughly 28 months. As of late August 2026, no Spanish launch date has been announced for the tablet. The injectable pen has been available in Spain by private prescription since May 2024, at full private cost, because it is not funded by the Spanish national health system for weight management. Check the AEMPS CIMA medicines database for the current authorised status of any product before assuming availability.

What The Holiday Doctor can and cannot help with

The Holiday Doctor provides continuation prescriptions in Spain: an asynchronous clinical review, by a Spanish-registered English-speaking doctor, for adults already taking a regular medicine who need it bridged or repeated while they are in Spain.

Outside what we do
  • Prescribing or supplying oral Wegovy, which is not available in Spain
  • Starting any weight-management medicine for the first time
  • Reviewing whether a weight-management medicine is working for you, or adjusting its dose
  • Adjusting thyroid medication, insulin or any other medicine in response to weight loss

A first-time start of a weight-management medicine sits outside our continuation-only remit, and that assessment belongs with a dedicated weight-management service such as Nivelta, our sister service, also from Doctor Abbs SL. If you already take a different regular medicine and need it continued while you are in Spain, that is exactly what we do.

Already take a regular medicine and running short in Spain?
Start a clinical review to check whether your medication is in scope. A Spanish-registered doctor reviews every request, and a prescription is issued only where it is safe and clinically appropriate. You pay only if a prescription is issued.
